Lanatullah Shia

Lanatulahi Alayh: An Explanation of the Concept

Origins and Meaning

Lanatulahi alayh is an Arabic phrase meaning "May the curse of Allah be upon him". It is typically used to express condemnation or disapproval, specifically regarding someone who has died upon Kufr (disbelief).

Shia Perspective

In the Shia tradition, lanat has gained significant cultural significance. It is frequently used in daily speech, such as "Ishrab wa zeed walan" (Drink, eat more, and may Allah curse...") when offering refreshments.

Sunni Perspective

The Sunni view of lanat is more restrictive. It is generally reserved for individuals whose death upon Kufr has been confirmed. However, some Sunni scholars also extend it to those who engage in severe sins or oppose the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his teachings.

Honorifics for Prophets and Imams

In contrast to lanat, the honorific "Blessings of Allah be upon him as well as peace" (ﷺ) is widely used among both Sunnis and Shias to express respect and admiration for Islamic prophets and Imams.

Example

The phrase "Salam LA" (لعنة الله عليهم) means "Allah's curse be upon them" and may be used to condemn those who have committed a grave offense. Curse be upon the killers of ameirul momineen."
